Review of the "Outpost"

Since its announcement, "Watchtower" has promised to become a local Ukrainian blockbuster. Filming of the film began in 2015, the premiere was supposed to take place a year later, but there was not enough funding (the total budget was UAH 400,000, 18 of which was paid by Goskino). The picture was still able to avoid the production hell and appeared at the box office quickly enough.

It's not for nothing that Yuri Kovalev's film was called the first Ukrainian mainstream cinema before its release. After viewing the painting, all expectations are confirmed. This is one of the few cases when a Ukrainian film has a clear focus on audience success, tries to interest its audience and even shows a desire to make money at the box office. "The Outpost" tells the story of a teenager, Vita, who accidentally ends up in 1129 during a tour of the Carpathians. There he meets the residents of the city of Rimovo, the outpost of Kievan Rus. In order to return back, the guy will have to not only find the magic Perun stone, but also help his new heroic friends overcome the sinister Polovtsian Khan.

Despite the fact that the original source for the film was the novel of the same name by Vladimir Rutkivsky, there were no problems with the script. Although fantasy stories don't have very high requirements, there are still a lot of narrative holes and illogicalities in the film. This is not surprising, because the painting was shot several times. That is why the problems of postproduction are visible to the naked eye and they have become perhaps the biggest drawback of Zastava.

It's about a very weak installation. Despite the good camerawork, we have not yet learned how to mount, especially for the action genre, and Zastava confirms this once again. A lot of unnecessary scenes, ridiculous transitions between frames and unsuccessful re-sound make it difficult to perceive a seemingly fairly simple and straightforward story.

As soon as the tape turns to an ironic tone, everything changes. The jokes work, the story is perceived more interesting, and it's even easier for actors to play comedic characters.

The situation is worsened by acting and poorly written characters. If you can still ignore the second one, then you can't get away from the first one. Admittedly, the film debuts of Eva Kosheva and Daniil Kamensky (who played the main characters) did not come out the best. Although the bogatyrs and Cumans are more confident in the frame, especially when the scriptwriters do not torture them with pretentious remarks. Especially memorable are Georgy Derevyansky in the role of grandfather Yevsey and Roman Lutsky, who played the hero Oleshko.

Oddly enough, I don't want to criticize the picture for the special effects. Yes, there is a terrible car crash scene at the beginning of the film, but it is overlaid by a good staging of the fights and good work on the stone golem. However, sometimes it seems that the authors of the tape did not understand their own strengths - the attempt to make "The Lord of the Rings" instead of "The Yankees at the court of King Arthur" is too painful to the eye.

Most of the visual effects turn out to be unnecessary, dramatic monologues and plot moves only complicate the perception of the film. Screenwriters should pay attention to Mark Twain, Terry Pratchett, or even Asterix and Obelix, where humor played a primary role and helped avoid the complexities of "high fantasy."

The painting does not claim to be a work of art, but honestly tries to entertain the public and from time to time does it successfully.

Despite the editing, ambiguous acting and one-dimensional characters, there is a significant plus in the "Outpost" that covers many disadvantages. This is a good example of mainstream Ukrainian cinema, which catches the attention of the audience and still manages to keep her until the end credits.
